5 false beliefs you hold that prevent you from making a living from your art
Ah, those limiting beliefs... They make us doubt ourselves, hold us back, and keep us in the shadows when our art deserves to shine.
Do you also sometimes feel those invisible blocks? Those thoughts whispering that you’re not good enough? Welcome to the club of artist-entrepreneurs seeking creative freedom, we’ve all been hit at some point by one (or more!) of these limiting beliefs.
But to make a living from your art, it’s essential to identify and challenge these false beliefs.
Let me share the ones I hear most often from the artists I work with—regardless of their age or years of experience:
1. Believing Art Is Just a Hobby
Myth : Your art can’t be your main career.
Réality : Many people make a living from their passion. The key lies in valuing your work, growing your audience, and diversifying your income streams for every piece you create.
How to Break Free:
- Value your art and give it the importance it deserves: Set fair prices and stand by the worth of your work. Don’t underestimate the time and energy you invest.
-
Build your personal brand: Create a strong, consistent identity through your artwork and online platforms. This is the first step to start shining.
-
Diversify your income: Explore different avenues like workshops, online courses, or selling derivative products. Consider new sales platforms—don’t limit yourself to what you already know.
2. Thinking You Have to Be Perfect to Succeed
Myth : Only perfect artists succeed.
Réality : Art is a journey, not a destination. Embrace imperfection and see each piece as a step toward greater success. Enjoy the process!
How to Break Free:
-
Adopt a growth mindset: Focus on continuous improvement rather than the final outcome.
-
Seek feedback: Share your work and welcome constructive criticism to grow. Find a mentor who inspires you and has experienced what you’re going through.
- Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself and allow room for mistakes. Life is a playground, and we’re always learning.
3. Believing Success Depends Only on Talent
Myth : It’s talent or nothing.
Réality : Success is a mix of hard work, resilience, and seizing opportunities. Investing in your personal growth is just as crucial as refining your art.
How to break free :
-
Commit to lifelong learning: Attend workshops, read books, and draw inspiration from others—not just in artistic techniques or trends, but in broader fields as well.
-
Set clear goals: Plan actionable steps to achieve your artistic and professional dreams.
- Cultivate perseverance: Learn to bounce back quickly from failure and see it as a learning experience.
4. Believing the Art Market Is Saturated
Myth : There’s no room left for you.
Réality : Every voice is unique, and there’s always space for fresh perspectives. Find your niche and connect with your audience.
How to break free :
-
Identify your niche: Discover what makes you unique and highlight it. Don’t try to be someone else—stay authentic.
-
Leverage social media: Use it to connect directly with people who share your interests.
-
Collaborate with other artists: Share audiences and ideas to create new opportunities.
5. Thinking Asking for Help Is a Sign of Weakness
Myth: You have to do everything alone to be legitimate.
Reality: A strong support network can boost your career. Join communities, seek mentors, explore new resources, and don’t hesitate to ask for advice.
How to Break Free:
-
Join artist communities: Share your experiences, doubts, and learn from others.
-
Surround yourself with experts: Find people who excel in their fields and let them handle tasks for you (accounting, exporting, social media, translation, etc.). You’ll go so much further with the right support.
-
Attend workshops and events: Build connections and exchange ideas with other creators. You’ll leave feeling inspired—because the sense of fulfillment goes far beyond just sales numbers.
Put Your New Beliefs into Action!
Break free from these chains and move toward your dreams. Remember, every great artist has had to overcome similar obstacles. You’re not alone in this journey.
To help you with this transformation, here’s a quick exercise:
- Write down three limiting beliefs you have about your art.
- For each one, create a positive affirmation to replace it.
- Read them daily!
